Complex sentences are made up of two clauses. An Independent Clause and a Dependent Clause.
An Independent Clause is:
A thought or idea that makes sense all by itself.
A Dependent Clause is:
A thought or idea that depends on another thought or idea because it doesn't make sense all by itself.
These are some of our complex sentences that we made up in our Whanau Groups.

- I went to the shop because I needed some clothes
- Even though I left home early, I was still late for school.
- Someone was coming to visit Mum and Dad today but I didn't know them.
- When I play with my friends I go outside on the playground
- Although I was able to reach the top of the pantry, I couldn't quite reach the candy.
Puriri 1 Whanau
- I went to the shops with my Mum in the weekend because we were running out of food.
- Even though I left home early, I still had to clean the house.
- Someone was coming to visit Mum and Dad today so that they can have a better job.
- When I play with my friends, we played on the swing.
Totara 1 Whanau
- I went to the shops because it was our daily shopping trip.
- Even though I went home I still had to get ready for a dance.
- Someone was coming to visit Mum and Dad when it was late at night.
- When I play with my friends it is always a sunny day.
- Although I was able to reach the top shelf in the pantry, I was still not able to reach the flour.
Totara 2 Whanau
- I went to the shops because I needed clothes.
- Even though I left home early, I still got to school on time.
- Someone was coming to visit Mum and Dad today so they can meet their friends.
- When I play with my friends, I'm also playing with my other friends.
Puriri 2 Whanau
- I wen tot eh shops because we needed food and water.
- Even though I left home early, I needed to catch a ride on the bus.
- Someone was coming to visit Mum and Dad today, if Mum and Dad were home.
- When I play with my friend, we play on the slide.
Pohutakawa Whanau
- I went to the shops because I needed to get a new iphone.
- Even though I left home early, I still went to school.
- Someone was coming to visit Mum and Dad today because they were having a talk about cooking.
- When I play wiht my friends, I bake a strawberry cake.
- Although I was able to reach the top shelf in the pantry, I couldn't reach the chocolate chip cookies.
