Basic Facts

All children will be bringing home a sheet outlining their basic facts test result tomorrow Friday 15th May. This will have a break down of their scores for: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division. It will also have the goal they want to achieve by next terms test.

There are a number of children who would benefit from concentrated work and improvement on these basic facts and it will really help their classroom maths learning.

We haven't touched on Multiplication or Division this year yet so don't worry too much on their scores in these areas. Addition & Subtraction is what we have been doing in class.

There are a number of websites where you can get printable basic facts sheets. I have linked one below. I also set basic facts homework each week on Mathletics. Please encourage your child to spend time on this at home for homework. Once again, the aim for each week is to get 1000 points.

Funky Feet is a great success at HPS.  Due to the weather, there might we days where this is cancelled if it is pouring with rain.  We still encourage children to walk to school with us for Funky Feet if it is raining softly and they have an umbrella or a raincoat.  If Miss Lister feels that the weather is not suitable on the day, she will post a cancellation post between 7:00 - 7:30am to the Howick Primary Facebook so that you are aware of the changes.  Page: https://www.facebook.com/HowickPrimarySchool?fref=nf

Auckland’s weather is so temperamental! Thunder, lightning and then torrential rain only to clear up to produce bright blue skies just in time for the Family Picnic. It was great to see so many families there. The water slide, swimming pool and zombie zone were very popular again this year.

Week Five has come around so quickly. Hard to believe we are half way through this term already. All the Middle School classes will be about to start our new concept unit: Systems. We will be looking at electrical systems and how the parts of these work together.

Student arrival time
Students should be arriving at school around 8:30 am. This allows them to organise their things before the bell goes and are ready to start learning.
On the other side, some students are arriving at school well before 8:30am. Kids Patch is available to supervise those students who need to be at school early in the morning.

Mathletics:
Students should have received their Mathletics login passwords.
A copy of this should be glued into their reading log so they can access Mathletics at home. Classroom teachers will allocate homework to be completed during the week. Students are expected to complete a minimum of 1000 points (bronze certificate).

If you haven’t ‘liked’ the HPS Facebook Page yet, this is also a well-used way of reminding you about events that are coming up. The HPS website also has useful information and school newsletters. See links below.

Term One - Week 1 Newsletter
Welcome to the 2015 school year in Room 7.
I’m really looking forward to working with you and your child this year.

The following information will help you assist your child to become independent and organised for school: This will be discussed in detail at the Meet the Teacher Evening on Monday 16th February.
During the hot weather it is helpful for the children to have a bottle of water on their desks to avoid dehydration. Other drinks can be kept in their bags for break times.

A school uniform sunhat must be worn when outdoors during terms 1 and 4. Putting on sunscreen in the mornings is a useful precaution.

Our swimming days are Monday, Thursday, and Friday weather permitting, although we will swim in the rain if it is warm. All children are expected to participate in the school swimming programme. However, if your child is sick or injured please send a note or email to excuse them from that day’s swimming. Please ensure all items of your child’s uniform are clearly named to avoid mix-ups. All children will wear a cap in the pool. Caps are available at the school office for $5.00.

Our library day this term is Tuesday. Year 3 children are allowed to issue 3 books at a time and Year 4 children are allowed 4 books.

Homework is expected. It is recommended that all children read for at least 15 mins per night and spend a similar amount of time practising basic facts, number knowledge and/or times tables. Maths homework will be set through Mathletics.

We value all kinds of reading, whether it is a book read at school that day, a library book or other reading material chosen by the child. Independent readers can choose their own reading material and may not bring home readers that have been read with the teacher. Reading material will be available for them to take home should this be required.
Reading should be recorded in their reading notebook. The children can do this themselves. The notebook should then be returned to school on a Friday for the teacher to see what has been read.

Please make sure your child has their Junior book bag or a sturdy plastic bag to keep books (and notices) clean and dry in their schoolbags.

We also feel that being read to by a parent, member of the extended family or an older sibling is important. Discussing the story is a good way of increasing comprehension.

Each term the children’s knowledge and quick recall of basic facts and times tables will be assessed.

Part way through the morning we have a fresh fruit or vege snack time. We find the children need a top up before the morning tea break and this is a way to encourage healthy eating. This is optional.
We would appreciate it if you could send a large box of tissues to school ready for when the inevitable sniffles come with the change of weather. We will look after these and put them out for the children to use as needed.

Our initial concept focus is Learning Focused Relationships and then we will be working on Systems, focusing on electrical circuits.

During the year, as part of the programme, we may take short walks/runs around the local streets. The utmost care will be taken to ensure everyone’s safety. Some children may be involved with group trips during class time for example sport, choir or chess. Please fill in the attached slip indicating whether or not you give permission for these walks/runs or group trips. Whole class trips will still need your permission even though the cost will be covered by the activity fee.
I will be using email as an extra way to communicate with you this year. Could you please include the email address/addresses that I can use on the attached slip.

Should you wish to contact me by email my addresses is: a.kilduff@howickprimary.school.nz

We will regularly share classroom learning with you through our classroom blog. The children LOVE seeing comments from parents and friends so please go on and comment on their amazing work. This will be up and running in the next couple of days. I’ll be posting classroom information and Room 7’s weekly newsletter on here also. www.2015hpsrm7.blogspot.co.nz.

We will also be using Facebook as a way of communicating team and whole school learning and reminders.

Our school website is:
http://www.howickprimary.school.co.nz

Kind regards
Miss Abi Kilduff

Room 7 class teacher
